Can the United Kingdom Achieve Zero Carbon Homes by 2050? (2017)

Zero Carbon Homes Dissertation – Under the challenging 2008 UK Climate Change Act, the UK government commitment to reducing carbon dioxide emission by 2050 is a huge task. These commitments would cause a huge disruption and changes down to in which we live currently. Identifying the housing sector as an area in which to reduce the carbon emissions could help reach the target. Given the total output of domestic housing emission in the UK holds up to 27 percent of total carbon dioxide emitted each year.

A huge dedication must be done to reform the housing community in order to meet the required target. This paper investigates the implications and practicalities of implementing zero carbon housing by 2050 through the UK. This study uses a qualitative questionnaire to investigate the impacts of zero carbon homes and the feasibility on it. The rising of costs, weak Government legislation and low market demand on zero carbon homes are the barriers that goes into the zero-carbon agenda and these pose threats into achieving the proposed target.

Committing to buildings all new homes to the zero-carbon standard have been done in the UK and the country shows positive attitude towards the movements. Some housing is now heading towards zero carbon, displaying its new technologies and techniques that would soon become a standard example in the future, but Zero carbon housing is an extremely demanding at the current state as it requires cooperation from all industry and essential for all house buildings to take initiative of the current movement.

New technologies and processes must be adapted by the home builders where in construction it is known for unwillingness to change, this would prove as a big hurdle in the industry. The house builders needing a greater clarity on the zero carbon Policy and how can it be achieved without compromising the goal. Giving the house builders as much flexibility in working towards the 2050 goal.
