The Effects of Remote Work on Employee Productivity During the COVID-19 Pandemic (2024)

This dissertation examines the multifaceted relationship between work-life balance (WLB), employee well-being, and organisational performance, particularly in the context of the shifting work dynamics influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. As organisations increasingly adopt remote and flexible work arrangements, understanding the impact of these changes on employee experiences has become paramount. This study synthesises existing literature and employs a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive insights from employees across various sectors.

The findings reveal that effective WLB practices significantly enhance employee engagement, job satisfaction, and overall mental health. Specifically, flexible work arrangements are found to reduce stress and improve work engagement by allowing employees to tailor their work schedules to personal needs. Conversely, the absence of supportive work environments can lead to increased conflict between work and personal life, adversely affecting employee performance and well-being. The research highlights the crucial role of perceived organisational support in fostering a healthy work-life dynamic, suggesting that organisations should prioritise the implementation of supportive policies and practices.

Furthermore, this dissertation discusses the implications of these findings for managers and organisational leaders, advocating for a strategic approach to work design that considers individual employee needs and promotes a culture of flexibility and support. The study also identifies gaps in the literature, particularly in relation to the long-term impacts of sustained remote work on WLB and employee outcomes. It calls for further research to explore these dynamics in a post-pandemic context, emphasising the necessity of adapting WLB strategies to evolving workplace realities.

The aim of this dissertation is to explore whether remote work has had an impact on the components discussed in the literature review. Initially, the study investigates the effect of remote work during the Covid-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom, focusing first on employees’ work performance and then examining their life and job satisfaction, as well as their work-life balance.
