Assessment into Road Safety Dangers Faced By Vulnerable Road Users in the UK (2016)

Vulnerable Road Users Dissertation – This dissertation focuses on Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) with respect to the road accidents that are encountered by them, in specific to the UK. The nation consists of more than 35 million vehicles and VRUs involve cyclists, pedestrians, and as such entities, in which a high number of accidents and injuries that have led to deaths have been reported. Even though, number of accidents have decreased over the years within the UK, but in particular to VRUs the number has been increasing.

This study has focused on this aspect and employed the techniques of qualitative and quantitative research methods. The study has utilised the primary source of collecting data from participants with a sample size of 100, and by using a questionnaire. The study has also used secondary sources for understanding the past literature studies and relating them with the obtained results of this study.

The study had applied the statistical tool of SPSS in this context by implementing the frequency distribution, regression, and t-tests in SPSS. The dependent variable had been the vulnerable road users, and the independent variable had been the road accidents. Most of the responses had agreed with the lack of safety awareness, impact of speed, and mismanagement of road traffic within the UK as well.

The findings have also depicted that proper road strategies have not been applied and relevant precautionary measures are not being taken in the UK. The study has suggested to apply proper training methods and safety awareness programs, to properly analyse the infrastructure aspect as well.

Considering the statistics available on the road accidents of the VRUs, it has been evident that the ratio of such incidents has increased. Therefore, the present research aims to highlight the issues of road safety and the problems pertaining to vulnerable road users in the UK.

The dissertation therefore intends to:

  • To investigate the cause of increasing number of road accidents that lead to injuries and fatalities of vulnerable road users focusing on pedestrians and cyclists.
  • To analyse the strategies related to road safety that is currently been adopted in the UK
  • To undertake a comparative research and study on the good practice examples and initiatives across Europe for increase in the road safety of VRU’s in the UK
  • To assess and focus on the issues in terms of the infrastructure and training provided for road users to increase road safety awareness
