PMO In Construction Firms – Is It Really Needed? (2019)

PMO in Construction Firms Dissertation – A Project Management Office (PMO) is not a new phenomenon and has been around for some time, however, trends indicate that this management tool is gaining traction and is being more widely used on mega projects in the construction industry. The debate about whether a PMO is effective or ineffective is still ongoing and this research was undertaken to highlight what makes a PMO effective, and if a PMO should be implemented on construction projects.

Questionnaires and interviews were conducted with mixed data collection methods which comprise of a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies to understand what makes a PMO effective. This dissertation aims to establish and assess how effective a PMO is, and what level of value it brings to a project through an in-depth review of two case studies. The strengths/advantages and weaknesses/disadvantages of the PMO attributes will thus be highlighted.

The dissertation also highlighted that projecting planning, clear scope definition, adequate resources and training and Client buy-in were essential elements of an effective PMO as indicated in the conclusion chapter.
