Even though, supply chain practices are being performed since ancient times, for example, military conflicts possessed an enormous logistical aspect; there is still limited understanding from today’s organizations about the nature & characteristics of this particular science, especially when compared with other well known business fields.
Such attitude could seriously jeopardize a company’s future as supply chain encompass a set of activities critical for a company’s success. Hopefully, there are an increasing number of companies that have started to realize the importance of this discipline for satisfying customers’ needs and shareholders’ expectations.
To satisfy this increasing demand for logistics knowledge, more focus has been placed in the industry and several new publications have been released to analyze the particular topic. However, there is still need for more realistic and up to date information in order to bridge the gap between theory and practice and better understand the concepts.
The importance of this area for modern businesses is discussed in this study alongside with methods currently used for accumulating the benefits of it. Furthermore, academic concepts and popular techniques are discussed but also combined and simulated through a case study where the current supply chain practices of a leading multinational company are under investigation. In this report, Intel’s distribution network is illustrated & its distribution process is presented and analyzed, from the time of placing an order until the order fulfillment time.
Also, focus has been placed in examining the effectiveness and efficiency of businesses to measure and appraise their supply chain activities. In order to better evaluate Intel’s supply chain efficiency and effectiveness, historical delivery records and relevant information of the organization are under investigation. This will assist in determining root causes of potential problem areas but also to evaluate the overall supply chain performance measurement system and suggest contingency actions if necessary.
