What Are The Relationships Between The Success Of A Project And Client Satisfaction, And Good Project Management And The Effective Management Of Stakeholder Relationships? (2013)

Client Satisfaction and Good Project Management Dissertation – In 2012 the construction industry in the UK contributed £83 billion in economic output, 6% in total. A little over 2 million jobs or 7% of the UK workforce were employed in the construction industry in June 2013. The construction industry, particularly house building, fared badly during the recent recession. Output in the construction sector fell faster than the whole economy in 2008. 2009 saw the sector recover faster than the economy as a whole, and 2010 and 2011 saw stagnant growth, followed by another contraction in 2012.

There have been many attempts to improve the industry over the years from the Simon report in 1944 to the most recent Rethinking Construction. The Egan report has become the major change agenda for the industry in recent times and set several ways in which the industry should improve, through better, more efficient and sustainable practices. Egan highlighted the need importance of the briefing process, client empowerment and the benefits good management at this stage and development of good relationships can have on a project in terms of success.

The lack of client satisfaction and poor industry reputation is a persistent thorn in the side of the industry and efforts must be made to improve this, and identifying the client’s requirements early is believed to be essential for project success. It had been suggested that empowering the client is one of the key areas to improve the briefing process and hence project success. This dissertation will look to focus initially on the project manager and outline the significance and effect the PM performance may have on a project success or failure, which has been questioned, although early research has shown to be significant.

To develop this further success criteria and management qualities will also be investigated, to evaluate what projects should aspire to and the qualities those involved at strategic level should possess. The dissertation will then introduce the idea that client relationships and the management of these from the initial inception of the project by the project manager is key to the successful outcome of a construction project. These points will be evaluated, and the presence of a link evaluated between successful relationships, overall client satisfaction and hence project success.

This dissertation is based on an understanding of a link between project performance and client relationships. It will look at the management factors which make project success achievable, and the extent to which a successful relationship is a key factor in project performance and ultimately client satisfaction.
