Benefits of Implementing Corporate Social Responsibility in the UK Construction Industry (2016)
CSR in the UK Construction Sector Dissertation – This dissertation explores the subject of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the construction sector. It examines the social and environmental benefits of implementing the principles of corporate social responsibility, focusing on the construction industry in the United Kingdom. The objectives of the study included an overview of CSR with an assessment of the benefits of this type of management policy.
It also set out to ascertain how CSR is implemented in the construction industry and the attitude to CSR along with the barriers that exist to widespread adoption of this policy. The research was conducted by conducting quantitative research based on a survey. The data was collected using primary data collection in the form of interviews with professionals working in a range of disciplines within the UK construction industry.
The findings of this research include the fact that there is confusion over the term CSR and that this policy is seen as sustainable reporting in the construction sector. Other findings include the fact that the construction industry is implementing CSR in areas such as health and safety, employee welfare and sustainable development. The research finds that industry professionals are aware of the power of the construction sector to drive a more sustainable society simply because of its influence on shaping the built environment.
The conclusion drawn from this research is that CSR is being implemented in the construction sector and that the industry has improved greatly in every aspect of CSR over the past decade. This is partly driven by a desire within the industry to improve its image, the need to cut costs and improve profitability along with a desire to enhance its environmental performance. It is further concluded that many of the improvements in the industry have been achieved through regulation and incentives, rather than a willingness on the part of the industry to make voluntary changes.
