Mergers and Acquisitions in the UK Mobile Telecommunications Sector (2013)
The research topic of the study is to find out the mergers and acquisitions taking place in the UK mobile telecommunications sector. The study has an aim to find out the strategic objectives of the organizations for adopting the policy of merger and acquisition. The study also highlights the problems faced by the organizations before and after adopting merger and acquisitions by taking the example of the companies of which the case study is included in the research. Telecommunication industry is the second largest industry in terms of adding value to the economy of UK.
There are many firms that are competing with each other; one of the oldest players of telecom industry is British Telecom and the other key players in the industry are: Orange, Vodafone, T-Mobile, O2 and Virgin. The secondary sources such as magazines, journals, articles, newspaper reports and internet sources helped us in collecting information related to the overview of the telecom sector in UK, strategic analysis of the firms conducted M&A in the telecom sector, management of strategies by such firms, challenges or problems faced by merging and acquiring firms and time duration of the M&A firms.
Secondary sources were also used to analyse the case studies mentioned in the study related to the latest mergers in the telecom sector: first is M&A of T-Mobile and Orange; and the second one is M&A between Sprint and Clear view. On the contrary primary sources were used to conducted statistical analysis on the basis of the responses of individuals working at the top level management of the firms in the telecom sector. Thus the overall analysis shows that merger and acquisition in the telecom sector lead towards strategic advantage for the firms, increase competitive ability of the firms, increases the worth of the shareholders and the firms, generate positive returns in short run and experience of the managers facilitate towards developing a successful merged or acquired firm.
The study is significant for the understanding the strategic objectives of the organizations for adopting the policy of merger and acquisition. The study will highlight the problems faced by the organizations before and after adopting merger and acquisitions by taking the example of the companies of which the case study is included in the research. The identification of the strategies, benefits and problems related to the merger and acquisition will enable us in analysing that whether these policies should be adopted by the organizations especially in the telecom sector or not.
