Virtual Organizations and The Contingent Workforce in Singapore. Can A Successful Business Be Built on a Contingent Workforce? (2019)

Virtual Organizations – Establishing a virtual organization primarily using a contingent workforce is increasingly a norm in this digital age. Despite the advancement in technology, there is still limited information regarding the establishment of virtual companies using the contingent workforce. The aim of this qualitative phenomenological research is addressing the research problem by examining the experiences of contingent workers and virtual workers.

The sampling technique and social media platforms were utilized in obtaining 108 participants among a target population of both contingent workforce and virtual workers. Through the distribution of online questionnaires, the data was collected and analyzed by open coding techniques.

Common themes emerged during the analysis of data. The themes regarding the establishment of virtual companies using contingent workers included flexibility of labor, technological support, and training, deep collaborations and recruitment, the efficiency of resources and market agility. Findings illustrated that establishing virtual organizations might vary depending on innovation, the individuals’ virtual competencies, technological advancement. The results might contribute to positive societal change.

This can be attained through education to contingent workers on the merits and demerits of a virtual company. Entrepreneurs might reference the outcomes of the study in their decision of establishing a virtual organization by hiring contingent employees, enhancing technological support and training. Also, the entrepreneurs can conduct an assessment of the market agility to determine the virtual business model and skills aligning with their goals.

The aim of the dissertation is is to establish how a virtual company in Singapore can be built primarily on contingent workforce. The dissertation attempts to answer the research objectives, which are as follows:
