Deployment of Corporate Social Responsibility in Pharmaceutical Companies (2020)
Value Logic in Business Models – This dissertation explores Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) deployment within the pharmaceutical industry. The chosen pharmaceutical companies are AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline due to being the most valuable FTSE100 pharmaceutical companies trading on the London Stock Exchange (LSE). This research is conducted by analyzing embedded responsibility on business model artifacts in five-year annual reports (2013-2017) for both companies using the thematic analysis as method.
Moreover, embedded responsibility elements and themes changes for both AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline during five years are analyzed by using intensity analysis. The research discussions also use comparative analysis to compare how AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline deploy CSR activities across their businesses.
This dissertation provides initial portrait of embedding responsibility elements and themes in business model of pharmaceutical companies, which are AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline. Findings in this paper contribute to the body of literature revolving around both business model and CSR. In addition, this dissertation also allows practitioners to develop embedding CSR in value logic business model as CSR awareness increased in order to perform better in business.
Value logic of business models and CSR are the main relevant concepts for this research. These concepts developed research interest in analyzing embedding CSR in pharmaceutical companies’ business model which are AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline, two of pharmaceutical companies that are listed in FTSE100. This research explains research interest through 2 research questions, which are:
- What responsibility elements are embedded in each company’s business model in which value function(s)?
- How are pharmaceutical companies’ embedded responsibility elements and themes in business models changing overtime for five years?
