A Server Based Content Adaptation Architecture Using Content Switching and Server Virtualization Technique (2009)

Server Virtualization and Adaptation Architecture Dissertation – The fast growing technology of mobile devices has become a major interest for researches to explore. This is because mobile devices such as PDA’s and smart phones have different capabilities such as screen size, screen resolution, storage size, processing power and type of network connection if compared to personal computers. Due to these differences, many web content applications have difficulties to adapt to these devices. The challenge to ensure that these devices receive equal quality to personal computers makes it tough to satisfy.

Most of the work that covers this area using the server-based adaptation approach lacks to point out issues regarding manageability and scalability. In this dissertation we propose a novel server-based content adaptation architecture using content switching and virtualization technique which can be applied for a large amount of concurrent requests for uploading process video files.

The main components for the proposed architecture consist of a web server, a database server and a content switching device. To ensure that the proposed architecture will work and achieve the highest computing performance some tests were conducted. From the results of the experiment, by using two virtual servers for the uploading process with 1MB of file size the increment percentage is 61.54%.

Therefore, we came to a conclusion that by using content switching and virtualization technique, less time is taken for a data to go from a mobile device to the server for the process of uploading video files and at the same time increase the number of concurrent users.
