Investigating Type 2 Diabetes Risk Among UK Black Africans and Asians Aged 40-60 (2018)
Type 2 Diabetes Risk Dissertation – According to the World Health Organization, Type-2 Diabetes and stress are global pandemics, with the percentage of affected individuals rising annually. Notably, newly diagnosed cases among Asian and African ethnic communities in the UK have seen a substantial increase, reaching up to 8.5 percent annually. This upward trend underscores the severity of the condition. However, it’s crucial to understand that Type-2 Diabetes is heavily influenced by lifestyle choices rather than being a solely genetic condition. This research focuses on UK residents of Asian and African descent aged 40-60, aiming to investigate the risk factors contributing to the high prevalence of Diabetes in this demographic.
The research methodology involved a systematic review of relevant literature. Secondary data from research papers were collected through searches in databases like OVID, MedLine, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library. Papers published before 2008 or in languages other than English were excluded, while those published between 2008 and 2017 and in English were included. Fifteen papers meeting the criteria were shortlisted and reviewed to extract research findings.
The systematic review identified three main themes linking social determinants of health to Type-2 Diabetes. Additionally, it highlighted the impact of smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and reduced physical activity on the likelihood of developing Type-2 Diabetes. Lifestyle choices such as alcohol consumption, overeating, smoking, and obesity are significant contributors to the disease, often resulting from sedentary lifestyles. Urbanization has further reduced opportunities for physical activity. Moreover, limited access to proper nutrition and lack of awareness exacerbate the risk factors for Type-2 Diabetes.
In conclusion, Type-2 Diabetes disproportionately affects the African and Asian populations in the UK. There is a pressing need to implement strategies promoting self-management techniques to help individuals deal with the complexities of the disorder. Furthermore, education and awareness initiatives are essential to inform and motivate people to adopt healthier lifestyles and dietary habits.
